Willa Cather comes up with figures which people can find in society and then in the later stages of the novel changes are made. First, the author wants to make us believe that the character exists, and then it is given a new shape that distinguishes him from the rest of the average people. 1851 is the year which the author talks about and it was the era when people were not so much polite in their behavior.

Being a priest Jean Marie Latour had to keep his calm all the time even when things forced him to become violent. Other priests of the society on some occasions used a tone that looked harsh from a distance but Jean never left the politeness present in his behavior.
For four decades the great priest spreads the teachings of religion most properly and tries to change a landscape that was too tough to bear in the first place. The stance which Jean took at the start of his life made him a little isolated in his field and society too but he didn’t run away from the challenge and fulfilled the duties that were assigned to him by the Almighty.

Such figures are rarely seen in real life because to become an ideal person a lot of sacrifices are needed as narrated by David Ackroyd. Compared to One of Ours and My Antonia the book will get higher grades for sure. It does not mean that the other two books are less in impact but this one is written in such a compact way that nothing can surpass it.
