Ive read a lot of books from this series and have liked some more than others. This story was definitely different. There was much more of a philosophical slant to it which applied to all the main characters. There was some good in the bad guys; some bad in the good guys.

I really enjoyed the book. I think theres only been one book of this series I just didnt like at all, so thats not surprising to me. If youre an Ed McBain fan, I definitely recommend this read. It may be different, but its well written and makes one think more than usual.

King\’s Ransom audiobook in series 87th Precinct

I’m a big fan of the 87th Precinct series but was a little disappointed in this one. Usually there are a few twists in the story but this one is pretty straight forward. A boy is kidnapped and ransomed, but unfortunately It’s the wrong boy. When the kidnappers find out they decide to keep to their original plan and ransom the boy anyway and It’s up to the 87th Precinct to save the boy. While written many years ago and not as good as many others in this series this book is still better than many now being published.

King\’s Ransom audiobook by Ed McBain

With the earlier, 50’s to early 60’s Ed McBain books, it’s unavoidable that some of the material suffers a little from age. In Kings Ransom, some of the dialogue has a thin crust of staleness to it and a key plot point about radios and phones in cars might make the average Iphone fan stumble. But as is also almost always the case, you just have to scratch the service a little to find a lively, intelligent, fast moving police procedural that should be essential reading for any fan of the genre.

King\’s Ransom audio narrated by Ron McLarty

Ed McBain is writer from the 50’s who brings alive the police work of the middle of the past century. It is always interesting to me although I am 70 years old and remember those days. A younger reader might find this style of writing too dated. And, of course, all the all-male squad-room talk about “dames” and “her set of knockers” etc., etc. might put some readers off. However, I like reading it; it takes me back in time.

McBain writes a mean story. Excellent characters! The pacing and action were great. Very enjoyable.

I love this series. Plus, you get through them quickly’ not a lot of extraneous filler to read.
