NOTE: I read and purchased the first two in the series, Amazon will not allow me to write a review for the second book for some reason and doesn’t recognize it a a paid order, so that review, since it completely describes this book too, is shown here. Thanks

I am not proud to admit I actually wasted my time to read not only this book and the previous one, but I read all the utter crap the author dumped after the book ended that added ten more percent to the written content. I am angry I wasted part of my life on this lazy writing. It is as if written by someone high or drunk and at first buzz it is way over explained! Everything with too many details and stupid quips he thinks are humorous, but just leave the reader confused, to after the buzz is gone, entire new species he does not bother to describe. What do they look like? Where do they come from? I did not know Miller, the MC’s BBF, was one of these other species till mid- book 2, I thought he was a regular human heavy-melee-fighter type player!

Here is an example of the writing to be found in these books, the author’s definition of an important title of the MC’s:

-Cheat Code Fighter: Forget long sequences of directional pad input. The only button-pressing youll be doing to get this title is using your creativity, wits and stunted sense of fair play to really drive your enemies up a wall.-

Is it funny? Does it better flesh out the title and enlarge our understanding of his character? No, and No. Yeah, I read two books of that!!!! Why? Well, I was doing busy work when the first audible book started… It was awful, lazy writing (have I mentioned that?) that made me angry to listen to. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to reach the controls to switch it off then …3 hours later…it got sorta interesting. … “Sorta Interesting” … This is the best it ever gets during both books. Yet still I read them, listened to the 1st book mostly and read the second book. You know how some books have cult references… But no, no clever wit here. A few times I got sorta interested however my interest only lead to confusion. Just when I think he is going to explain something as in the, Game Manual, I discover it is instead a “joke” list of characters. Describing the same character but with a different name (like he didn’t think we would notice. ) twice or listed characters that were not even in the book!

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!!

Towards the end after the author escapes the jail he writes a jumble of words and sentences, only they don’t tell us what the MC is doing, the plot doesn’t exist.

Example: “I am going to stop a messenger going to an army that is marching here next to another one ..one of those may be an ally from somewhere else that will stand by us as long as it is convenient, but the messenger will give a message from someplace for the general to attack. The general does not want to attack and wishes she didn’t command the fate of others, but she is a Firbolg (this species is never explained but they hate humans) so she will do her duty! The general and the messenger drink bad wine”

and the stage is set for: ACTION!

That is the plot after he gets out of jail. Hope I didn’t spoil it for anyone.

I would like to tell the author, “Dude, you are not funny. Stop trying.” Maybe: Don’t drink, Write, then hit Publish. I would like to warn everyone else to pass these books by, do not be enticed by sorta interesting like I was. You will regret it so much writing a vague, confused 1000 word review to explain your helpless, angry confusion will seem like a GOOD IDEA!

The Beginning (War Aeternus #1) audiobook streamming online

From the author of The Bathrobe Knight series and The Merchant of Tiqpa series. Charles Dean combines good story telling with an original RPG world full where the gods compete for fame and glory by meddling in the lives of us mortals. The latest pawn in this game is Lee. A normal boring human from our world thats plucked out of his mediocre life and sent to a world ruled by RPG mechanics to get faith points for the god of alcohol and crafting. While completing some quests in this world, Lee stumbles upon a sinister plot that threatens the people hes come to care about in this RPG world. Will risk his life and try to help these new friends or will he try escape back to his boring, safe life on earth?

This is a good story full of action and adventure. Yet its more than just an action romp. There are interesting themes in the novel about what it means to be divine and have faith. There are also questions about what people would do if they were given real power. Late in the story there are even subtle threads about the cost of violence on a mans outlook on life. Dont worry, theres still plenty of good old fashion fighting, quest solving, XP gaining, skill progression, and humor too.

Game mechanic wise theres a good deal of info given in the story and from reading the story I think I could roll a character in this world. Though Id like to think I could be a god of coffee and bacon Id probably end up being something boring like the minor spirit of book reviews.

Overall, a fun interesting read.

Score: 7 out of 10.

Audiobook The Beginning (War Aeternus #1) by Charles Dean Joshua Swayne

An easy read and interesting story, told in a slightly off handed manner. Our “Hero” is living his life on autopilot when carried away by a shape changing god to a world with RPG characteristics, transforming into an NPC. His job – to bring new members into his god’s drinking and crafting faith. His methods include a great deal of awkward sword play, fried chicken, and bacon.

The occasional typo is thrown in, probably for comedic effect, and it appears a harem is about to form. By the book’s end, our hero has leveled appropriately, learned a few interesting skills, and has concluded his initial major quest. Since no tutorial or manual were provided, he learns the hard way, and finds out a few very interesting things about himself.
An fun read with as much philosophy as game play…

Audio The Beginning (War Aeternus #1) narrated by Jeff Hays Soundbooth Theater

3 stars for effort. 1 star for execution. 3 stars for plot resolution. End rating comes out to a 2.33, but I decided to defy mathematics and universal logic to round up to three.

The character is only moderately relatable and infinitely awkward. The author does not have a particular way with words. But he wrote the story from start to finish in a way that is mostly coherent.
Also, Harem. Book one doesn’t lead to any actual sex scenes. I thank my lucky stars that I didn’t have to skip through that inevitable storm of awkward. But it’s definitely coming. Story was an odd mix of creativity and author navety. Good bones – poor flesh. Whatever.

I thought this book was well written and had a good plot. The religious part wasn’t my favorite, as some others have said. I just don’t care about it in a Litrpg. I liked the characters, and the development, so I would recommend this book. I was confused about some of the wording (example: when in battle someone would kill the enemy and the author would say they murdered them???) Maybe this is a personal view of the author or something, but if you are having a battle then you killed them, not murdered them? lol maybe it’s just me, but after reading that word several times in these situations it kind of grated on me….
